Inside Look: A Streetcar Named Desire Discussion with Broadway Show Cast!
On Monday night, I attended a panel discussion on one of Broadway’s hottest new show called ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’, a Tennessee Williams’ Pulitzer Prize-winning piece. The discussion, which took place at NY’s The Greene Space, included cast members Golden Globe nominee Blair Underwood, in his Broadway debut as Stanley, Daphne Rubin-Vega (Rent) as Stella, Nicole Ari Parker (“Soul Food”) as Blanche, Wood Harris (“The Wire”) as Mitch and Director Emily Mann (Artistic Director of Princeton’s esteemed McCarter Theatre). Also in attendance were the executive producers, Stephen Byrd and Alia Jones, best known for their Broadway revival of ‘Cat on a Hot Tin Roof’.
It was a lively discussion on the obstacles involved in bringing this play to Broadway, how casts members and the director wrestled with preserving the authenticity of Williams’ masterpiece while injecting new life, and what they hoped the audience would takeaway from the show.
Streetcar tells the “tragic story of fragile former schoolteacher Blanche, who leaves the family plantation house and moves to New Orleans to live with her sister, Stella, and Stella’s animalistic husband, Stanley. She quickly gets a gritty life lesson in the seamy, steamy underbelly of 1940s life in the French Quarter.”
As I’m always in search of a style shot, see the pics in the slideshow (including moi with actors Wood Harris and Blair Underwood)!
