Paris Couture Week: Ulyana Sergeenko Spring 2013
Monday, February 4, 2013 — Russian haute couture designer Ulyana Sergeenko presented a ‘Gone with the Wind’ meets chic Eastern European model, meets mythical playland. The spring 2013 offering was an unexpected juxtaposition from the typical Paris Couture shows, but still a feast for the eyes.
A ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ look?! Totally unwearable, and yet I love the collection!

Paris Fashion Week: Elie Saab Spring 2013
Thursday, January 31, 2013 — While looking through photographs of the Elie Saab Spring/Summer show, my jaw, was quite literally, on the floor. As I flipped from one image to the next, each gown was better than the last. The embroidery on each garment was flawless. The pieces ranged in color from pale pinks and blues to vibrant reds and blacks. Each article of clothing formed to the silhouette of the model and complimented the body. Hair was pulled back in a twisted bun, and makeup was soft and simple. There was no need for bold lips or fancy hairstyles, the clothes needed and deserve all of the attention. This collection was reminiscent of a fairytale with the soft hues, delicate embroidery, and blooming flowers on each piece. Elie Saab captures the delicate beauty of a woman and recreates that beauty in her pieces. This collection, in it’s simple silhouettes, yet intricate details, has been dancing around my thoughts since I laid eye on it, and will probably continue to do so for some time.

Paris Couture Week: Chanel
Monday, January 28, 2013 — Vogue called this show, “A Midsummer Night’s dream gone gothic.” While, this does describes the show, it doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface of the beauty of this couture collection. Chanel’s Spring/Summer 2013 haute couture show was another wonder to the eye that took place during Paris Fashion Week on January 22, 2013.
This show was similar to the Dior show in that it was also staged in a garden-like backdrop. “I saw it in a dream, put in on paper, had it sketched, and gave it to the men who built my set, and I think they worked it out beautifully,” stated Karl Lagerfeld in an interview about his inspiration for the “magical forest” runway. Runway is used loosely in this context. The models were actually free to walk around a large open area. This allowed for the clothes to be viewed at all angles and for a longer time frame. The models donned dramatic, gothic makeup with hair casually thrown in a messy bun and finished off with large feathers and tulle to add a bit more drama.
This couture show was, if to be summed up in a word, dramatic. The gowns were over the top and beautiful. Karl Lagerfeld has perfected the recipe for over the top pieces without ever being gaudy. Chiffon, lace, tulle, sequins, and feathers could be found on each piece- and at times all on one gown. Patterns were also a component to many ensembles, more specifically floral patterns. Among the glorious feathered frocks and sequin floor length gowns, Karl added the classic Chanel tweed coat with a twist. The shoulder of the coat featured an extra piece of fabric to extenuate the shape of the shoulder. Its added a boxy feel to an otherwise soft Chanel jacket we are used to seeing. Enough cannot be said of the splendor and detail put into each garment, but one thing hold true- Karl Lagerfeld knows how to craft haute couture.

The Oldest Runway Model, Carmen Dell’Orefice, Graces the Catwalk at Paris Couture Fashion Week
Sunday, January 27, 2013 — Where there’s a runway and fierce fashions to be worn, Carmen Dell’Orefice is there. Working. The. Catwalk. The question is: can you deal?
Ms. Dell’Orefice closed the Stephane Rolland couture spring 2013 show last week in Paris. Her head to toe, white pantsuit worn under a voluminous cape, and topped with coral-like spikes on the shoulders was dramatic, yet effortless.
My first encounter with the dynamic 81-year-old model was at the spring 2013 NY Fashion Week last fall where she walked the Norisol Ferrari show. It was so fun to be apart of her moment - in the moment - before news broke elsewhere that she indeed slayed the runway with her refined, yet playful presence.

Paris Couture Week: Dior Couture Spring 2013
Spring was in the air at the Dior Couture Spring 2013 fashion show on January 21 in Paris. The show featured whimsical pastel pieces that emulated Spring mixed with a few masculine pant suits. The models walked through a botanical garden like runway lined with luscious green shrubs and trees. While the runaway was stunning, it certainly did not take away from Christian Dior’s designs. To compliment the colors and designs in the show, the models were all styled with a pixie cut, neutral face and eyes, but their lips popped in sparkly red and plum shades.
One design that really stood out was a bright yellow sleeveless gown. The fabric flared out at the hips creating a beautiful shape and then came back in to create a fitted sleek look. The designer took advantage of dimension in a sheer black tulle dress with orange and yellow flowers that looked as though they were growing along black vines that encircled the dress. The dress was paired with elbow length gloves with the same design that added glamour and elegance. An ivory multicolored embroidered sleeveless gown that flared at the waist was exquisite. The flowers on the piece were so well crafted one would think they were lifelike.
This Dior Couture Spring show has me inspired and excited for the Spring months. Bright, bold colors and florals are on the horizon!

Kate Moss in Alexander McQueen at London Olympics Closing Ceremony
Monday, August 13, 2012 — After an incredible London Olympic games, the producers just had to go and give me life once more. By that I mean, the closing ceremony featured a sea of Alexander McQueen haute couture worn by one of the baddest models to ever hit the catwalk, along with other famous British faces. Designs by Vivienne Westwood, Erdem, as well as other prominent British designers were featured.
Simply put, the 2012 London Games had something for everyone, even the fashion obsessed (tear). BRAVO!
Outfitted in an array of coordinating lavish gold ensembles, a handful of Britain’s most recognisable model faces took part in the Olympic Games Closing Ceremony this weekend.
Putting on a show to David Bowie’s ‘Fashion’, Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Lily Cole, Stella Tennant, David Gandy, Jourdon Dunn, Georgia May Jagger, Lily Donaldson and Karen Elson strut their stuff in front of the 80,000-strong stadium crowd. Vogue UK’s Lucinda Chambers dressed the models in designs by Alexander McQueen, Erdem, Vivienne Westwood and more British designers.
Men’s Fashion Week Spring 2013: Alexander McQueen
Monday, August 13, 2012 – If you were expecting the House of McQueen to deliver a menswear collection devoid of the whimsical elements typically found in the late designer’s couture offerings, then you were sadly mistaken. From a gold, black, and metallic, patchwork blazer-pant combo, to an unassuming black suit adorned with dragonfly brocades, the spring 2013 menswear presentation was much more colorful than I expected. I was particularly impressed with how Sarah Burton (creative director at McQueen) effortlessly married the more theatrical looks with her take on the Ralph Lauren, American sportswear aesthetic.
The collection, which recently debuted in Paris during Men’s Fashion Week, offers something for everyone (if your style is a young, eccentric Gatsby). The color story included resort wear shades (white, beige, macadamia), as well as navy blue, silver, and metallic. McQueen’s twist on a current trend was in the form of a white suit, in a three-button style, paired with a navy shirt, textured tie, a fun, yellow, flowery broach, and footwear that was a cross between boat shoes and fancy slippers. I also liked the macadamia nut-colored cotton sateen suit and, in general, the versatility of the collection. Not only are most of the looks - aside from the formal wear – chic and timeless, but it lends itself well to mixing and matching which extends the life of your wardrobe.
New trend alert: while the European, slim leg was prevalent throughout, there were a number of looks where models wore semi-wide leg pants. And surprisingly, I wasn’t nauseated by it!
